Walter W. Bailey m. May Gustetter, Jan. 31, 1910, Tucson, AZ (Arizona Marriages, 1888-1908).

Tucson Daily Citizen (Tucson, Arizona), May 3, 1943, p 7:

"Death Claims Walter Bailey, Thrice Sheriff

Former County Official Dies In Phoenix; Had Long And Varied Public Career

Walter Bailey, for three terms sheriff of Pima county and unsuccessful candidate against Ed Echols in the 1942 Democratic primary, died last night in Phoenix after a six-months illness. First stricken last fall, Bailey's illness came to the notice of the public when on Nov. 7, 1942, he became seriously ill while serving on a jury in the superior court and was forced to withdraw.

Bailey was elected sheriff of Pima county in 1922 and served from 1923 through 1926, leaving his post at that time to return to ranching. But he was back in the sheriff's office in 1931 and 1932 for a third term.

Headed Prison Camp

In 1933 Bailey took over a position as head of the federal prison camp in the Catalina mountains and held that position until his withdrawal on July 1, 1942, to run again, unsuccessfully, for the sheriff's post. During his years of service at the prison camp, Bailey made a tour of other prison camps on the coast about three years ago to study and compare methods.

The ex-sheriff was born in Pinal county, raised as a cowman, and early entered the U. S. customs service in Nogales in 1900, serving as a customs officer, guard, deputy collector, and mounted inspector. When Bailey was in the latter capacity he resigned to become one-half of the total law enforcement body of Santa Cruz county – as undersheriff, chief deputy, and jailor.

In Cattle Business Once

Bailey soon returned to the customs service for 12 years, after a lively time in Santa Cruz county, and then spent a short time in the cattle business with the La Osa ranchos before his entrance into the Pima county sheriff's picture in 1922.

Funeral arrangements, in the hands of Reilly's undertaking company, have not as yet been completed. The body is being sent here from Phoenix."
