Adolph Gilles was born on Jun 11, 1881 in Kentucky to parents John Gilles (1844-1913) and Elizabeth Strehl (1847-1927), both born in Luxembourg. Adolph was the sixth child of a family of nine children. His known brothers and sisters were:
Paul Gilles, (1871-1898),
Theodore Gilles (1872-1955),
John Aloysius Gilles (1874-1955),
Mary M. Gilles-Simon (1876-1935),
Philomena Gilles (1878-1934),
Joseph T. Gilles (1884-1971),
Frank Gilles (1886-1955), and
William A. Gilles (1887-1971).

On May 22, 1906 in Ownesboro, Daviess County, Kentucky, Adolph married Mary Albertina Weikel (1884-1958). Mary was a daughter of Sebastian Weikel (1859-1935) born in Indiana, and Rachel Frederika Leppert (1862-1940), born in Germany.

Adolph and Mary were settled into a life of farming in 1910 in Daviess County, KY. They raised five children:
Paul Eugene Gilles (1907-1988),
Herman Joseph Gilles (1908-1987),
Mary Agnes Gilles-Atherton (1911-1994),
John S. Gilles (1913-1995), and
Rachel Elizabeth Gilles-Allen (1917-1993).

In 1920, the family is next listed in the census as residing in Owensboro, KY where Adolph is working as a merchant of soft drinks. Between 1920 and 1930, Adolph and Mary separated and divorced. On the census they list their marital status as widowed. Mary and the children remained in Owensboro. Adolph moved to St. Louis, KY.

In 1944, Adolph was admitted to the Evansville Indiana State Hospital in Evansville, Indiana where he died four years later on Oct 1, 1948 of senility and a fractured femur. His marital status on his death certificate is marked divorced. He is buried in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Evansville, Indiana - there is no marker on his grave.
