Betty Mathews
Betty Jean Mathews, 73, of Mount Pleasant died at 2:33 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2010, at her home following a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's.

Born March 12, 1937, in southeast rural Henry County, she was the daughter of James "Clarence" and Florence Avis Trueblood Woodsmall. On May 19, 1953, she married Ralph Lee Mathews in Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Mathews started work for Mount Pleasant Telephone in 1955 and retired in 1992 from GTE Telephone Co., serving in customer service and supervisor positions. She retired and worked for Shull Chiropractic in Mount Pleasant as a secretary, retiring in 1994.

She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1955. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Mount Pleasant. She was a longtime member of Mount Pleasant Chapter of Sweet Adelines. She was an original member of Mount Pleasant Women's Bowling Association, active for 48 years and served as a team captain for the first 45. She was instrumental in organizing the Communication Workers of America for the local telephone company. She was also a member of the Iowa Archaeological Society.

She enjoyed photography, music, leading sing-a-longs for the elderly and disabled, hunting for arrowheads and Indian artifacts, hot air balloons, dancing, camping and the Hawkeyes.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Lori A. Mathews-Sammons of Mount Pleasant; one son, Michael S. Mathews of Mount Pleasant; four grandchildren; one brother, Wendell "Barney" Woodsmall of Mount Pleasant; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
