The parents of Burgess A. Rowland were John Barnes Rowland and Columbia Thompson. His mother died when he was about 11 years old. His father soon remarried to Julia Harllee and later to Ester Williams. At some point near the time of his 3rd marriage, John Barnes Rowland apparently changed his name to John Rowland Barnes.
