John was the son of Joseph Morton, (born 1693 in Henrico County, VA and died March 22, 1735 in Halifax County, Virginia) and Elizabeth().John married twice, Amy Jonson & Lucinda "Lucy" Blakeley/Blaekley.

John married Amy Johnson in 1732, Pittsylvania, Virginia. Amy was born in 1733 in Brunswick, Virginia and died June 17, 1776 in childbirth with daughter Suzannah, she was 43 years old. In their 14 years of marriage they had 8 children: Joseph named for John's father, Jahu, Mary, John named for John's grandfather, Isaiah the Power of Attorney for his father's estate, Lavina "Leviney", Sarah, and Amy.

John married Lucinda "Lucy" Blakeley September 27, 1777 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. Lucy was born October 08, 1760 Luenburg County, Virginia. She died on September 26, 1839 in Mount Sterling, Montgomery County, Kemntucky. They were the parents of 8 more children: John Johnson to honor first wife, James, Martha Patty, Armistead, Nancy, Joab, Hezekiah, and Richard, for a total of 16 children.

John died before making move to Kentucky. Lucy was 38 years old when she came to Kentucky, without her John.

John was a man of status. He was appointed Justice of the Peace of Prince Edward County, Virginia by King George on March 02.1759. Afterwards he was named Chief Justice.
Colonel John Morton at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, formed a company of Infantry, embracing 4 of his sons, Charles, James, Hezekiah and Benjamin. He was appointed Captain John of the 4th Virginia Regiment on February 19, 1776. He was appointed Lt. Colonel on February 23, 1778. He held position of Commissioner of Provisions and served His Majesty in th War between Great Britain and France by order of Govenor Dinwiddle.
