Mr. Burgess was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a postal clerk for seven years and was the owner-operator of Burgess Cycle Shop for 51 years, retiring in 1996.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral, St. Mary's School Board, Knights of Columbus 3rd degree, Elks Lodge 718, Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion Post 62 and Salina Country Club.
He had served in the past as city commissioner and mayor of Salina, was on the Sacred Heart Cathedral Inter-Parochial School Board, board of trustees of St. John's Hospital and board of directors of Salina Chamber of Commerce, was president Business Improvement District of Salina.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie. Survivors included his wife, Ann; four daughters, Mary Ann Thomas, Joan Mann, Debbie Yerke and Linda Sikora; four stepdaughters, Julie Colahan, Marty Winkelman, Missy Hodge and Alison Brake; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
