Andrew was a New Jersey native, having grown up in Paterson. After attending a vocational school he moved to Miami and was working at a boatyard. He owned a small sailboat which he had refurbished. When a hurricane approached the coast of Florida, Andrew swam out to his sailboat which was anchored just 50 yards off of Pelican Harbor in Biscayne Bay. He drilled a hole into the hull of the boat to sink it. (This is often times done to marine craft to lessen damage during a storm.) As he was swimming back to the shore in a chop he drowned. A police officer witnessed him go under. A group of twelve searched for Andrew but he had been swept away. He would be the only hurricane death in Dade County as a result of the storm. He was returned home to New Jersey and buried with his older brother Norman, who had died during WWII.
