Married in November of 1860. A few short months later he enlisted with the rank of a sergeant into company F of the 97th Virginia Militia regiment. His enlistment papers describe him as standing 5ft 11in tall, having a dark complexion, and having grey eyes and auburn hair. In April of 1862, the 97th was disbanded. A short while later David joined the 7th Virginia Cavalry, probably at the same time as his younger brother William. He and his brother served through the end of the war, they surrendered together at Winchester, Virginia on June 1st, 1865. David returned to Luray after the war.
A Farmer by occupation, once during the Civil War he was detailed for tanning work.
