"Herbert D. Boardman, 78, of Manchester, died in his sleep at his home early Tuesday morning, July 14, 1992.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 17, at Shelly Funeral Home, with the Rev. Deborah Bartelt of Community Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Burial was made in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
The son of Lembuel and Ada (Tharp) Boardman, he was born Jan. 17, 1914 on his parents' farm in Delhi Township, Delaware County, near Delhi. He attended rural schools for several years, then moved to Manchester with his family and graduated from Manchester High School with the class of 1933.
He worked for the M&O Railroad until 1942, then established Herb's Repair and Welding Shop, which he operated until selling the business in 1951. He then opened Herb's Radio and TV Repair, which he has operated since that time.
He enjoyed many hobbies, including amateur radio, motorcycling, and making silver and gemstone jewelry, and was a member of the Cedar Valley Treasure Hunters Club in Cedar Rapids.
He was married to Emily Schwanke on Dec. 6, 1932 in Galena, Ill. They made their home in Manchester all their married life together. His wife died Feb. 29, 1980.
Surviving are two sons, Richard of Manchester, and Larry of Arlington; two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Sandra) Ross and Mrs. Don (Janet) Wendling, both of Manchester; one brother, Floyd, of Jonesboro, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Glen; and one sister, Anna Hines.
Shelly Funeral Home of Manchester was in charge of arrangements.
