Thomas, a farmer, was the son of James Marion & Mary Syrena (Carr) Shields. He married Sarah Ann Priscilla Stansel in Acworth, Cobb Co, GA, on 27 Dec 1883.
Sarah and Thomas lived on a farm about eight miles northwest of Peterburg, TX. In October, 1925 Sarah contracted Influenza, which contributed to her death. She died at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 14, 1924, from Chronic Aortic Stenosis. She was 59 years old.
Thomas died on Jan. 12, 1936. His death was caused by "Thrombo-Angina Obliterans with Gangrene." He had lived 77 years, 3 months, & 2 days.
His daughter, Mary Shields, of Plainview, TX was the informant on his death certificate.

The following obituary, printed in the Leonard, TX newspaper, was transcribed by Richard Thomas Shields, grandson of Francis Marion Shields, the son of Thomas Lafayette. They lived in Leonard and the Leonard area for many years before moving to Petersburg in 1918.
"FORMER LOCAL MAN PASSES AWAY JAN 12, 1936
T. L. Shields, one of the pioneer citizens of this vicinity, died at his home near Plainview, Tx., on January 12, 1936, after a lingering illness of several months.
Tom Shields, as he was familiarly known, was one of our foremost and best citizens, and contributed largely to the up building of the better things of the surrounding community. He was always active in church and school work, having joined the Baptist Church early in life and living a consistent Christian until the end.
He was born near Rome, Ga. on Oct. 10, 1858, moving at the age of nine years to Athens, Ala. and to Texas in 1880, settling four miles west of Wolfe City, about a mile and a half east of Hickory Creek.
On December 27, 1883, he was married to Miss Sallie Stansell, of Ga., bringing her back to Texas with him. She was a sister of the late N.B. Stansell, a prominent farmer of the Hickory Creek section. In 1908 Mr. Shields moved to Leonard where he resided until 1918, when he moved to the vicinity of where he died. His wife preceded him in death a little more than ten years ago.
To this couple were born six children, all of whom survive. They are as follows: C.D. Shields of Melrose, N.M., F.M. Shields of Wolfe City, Mary Shields of Plainview, J.L. Shields of Plainview, Mrs Saleta Miller of Anna, Tx, Mrs Carrie McDaniels of Petersburg, Tx., Mrs. M.P. Malone and Mrs. Hassie Wingo of Leonard were cousins of the deceased.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 14, at the Petersburg Baptist Church, under the direction of Rev, Britton and Rev Elmer Weathers of Plainview, Tx."
