Matilda L. Leiker was born Matilda Herrman on November 11, 1901, at Liebenthal, Kansas. She died October 12, 1991, at Kenwood View Nursing Home.

Mrs. Leiker and her first husband, John Peter Schmidt, operated the Schmidt General Mercantile in Liebenthal. He died in 1939.
She and her second husband, Leo Leiker, farmed in Saline County. He died in 1957.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Sacred Heart Cathedral parish, the Cathedral Ladies Guild and the Salina Eagles Auxiliary.

A daughter, Mary Helen Burton, died in 1952; a son, Marcus Schmidt, died in 1977; and two stepsons, C.F. Leiker and Isadore Leiker, both died in 1978.

Survivors include two sons, Jerome Schmidt and Bartol Schmidt; four stepsons, Jerry Leiker, Clarence Leiker, Elmer Leiker and Victor Leiker; two daughters, Sylvia Waldschmidt and Melvina Gack; five sisters, Stella Miller, Cecelia Sanders, Isabelle Schuckman, Mary Barnes and Geneva Champlin; three brothers, Reinold Herman, Walter Herman and John Herman; 24 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
