Fred arrived at the port of New York on February 18, 1901 from Sweden. He worked as a lumberjack in the big trees in northern California for awhile with his brother Oscar. He went through the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. He was employed as a carpenter at the time. He met his wife in San Francisco and they married in 1911. A few years later they moved to Stevenson, California where Fred took up farming.
About 1942 Fred & Ellen separated with Ellen moving to San Francisco. Fred left farming in 1948 to become a night watchman at an Army Surplus store located at 1281 North Hwy 99 in Turlock. He lived in the building and slept on a cot in the rear. This is where he passed away the night of June 14th, 1954.
