This is my great grandmother, second wife of William Lawrence Byron. They had 5 living children. Their daughter Mary Byron Gilruth was my grandmother.

We do not know exactly how events unfolded in those early days but we do know some things...William Lawrence's older son, Thomas Byron, had married a girl by the name of Kitty Shea. Kitty's sister, Mary, and her husband James Manning, had married and moved to Wales to start their family because there was work there in the mines.

It is obvious that William and Mary followed them there because their second child, Lawrence, was born there in 1867. His birthplace is listed as Rhymney, Monmouth County, Wales. Further evidence of the family's connection is the fact that the 1871 Wales census shows them living near each other on Goshen Street in Rhymney. Many other members of the Manning family lived in nearby Merthyr Tydfil.

While living in Rhymney, three more children were born to William and Mary...Edward and his twin brother who died at birth in 1870 and Margaret who was born in 1872. At that time, it appears that the family decided to take their family to America.

William, according to the census followed in 1873. The Manning family would not emigrate until the 1880s. Mary and William's first stop appears to be in Scranton, PA where their last child was born in 1874, my grandmother. The Byron's moved on to Newport Station by 1880.

1880 Luzerne, Newport, Pa census with these children: Mary age 6, Margaret,8, Edward 10,Lawrence 13,Ellen 14,Patrick 18, William 22. Also next to this family is a Thomas Byron 29B Ireland with wife Mariah 18.
