William H. "Bill" Gable, 87, of Scottsbluff, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his family.

A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be sent to Prairie Haven Hospice, Two West 42nd Street, Suite 2300, Scottsbluff, NE 69361. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.dugankramer.com.

Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services in Scottsbluff is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bill was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Scottsbluff, to Ted and Lillian (Kelly) Gable. He was the firstborn of four children. His early life was spent working on the family farm. He was educated in Scottsbluff.

While serving in World War II, he was awarded a scholarship and attended a university in Austria.

He married the "love of his life," Mary Ann Outson, on Oct. 5, 1944, in Belton, Texas. To this union, three children were born, Steve, Mike and Cleta.

Bill served with pride in the 232nd Infantry Regiment, 42nd Division (Rainbow) as a military policeman and participated in campaigns in France, Germany, Austria and Italy. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, Victory Ribbon, EAMET Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal for heroism. After the war ended, he participated in search and recovery operations to apprehend German troops and return them to Nuremburg for trial of war crime charges. He was honorably discharged on May 1, 1946.

He farmed when he returned home from the service.

Bill served as commander of VFW Post No.1681 from 1966-67. He was appointed admiral of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska in 1988 by Gov. Kay Orr.

Bill also worked for the county A.S.C.S. office in Scottsbluff and Bridgeport for many years. He then worked for the State of Nebraska as an inspector, and for the federal government from 1975 until his retirement in 1988. He loved his job and was respected by his peers.

Bill had a tremendous ability as a storyteller. Family would all gather around his table and enjoy every moment spent with him. There were countless "championship" pitch and cribbage games and always so much laughter.

Bill loved life and embraced each day. He was always happiest when surrounded by family. He was an eternal optimist and had a way of always seeing the best in everyone

When asked, "How are you?" he would reply with a jovial "I'm perfect" and a big smile.

He was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. He was a devoted caregiver for his "bride" Mary Ann for eight years until her passing, as well as many other family members and always opened his home for anyone in need. Bill worshiped the Lord in action and prayers.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Steve and Jade Gable of Camp Verde, Ariz. daughter and son-in-law Cleta and Randi Nuss; daughter-in-law Florence Gable, all of Scottsbluff; grandchildren Christy (Mick) Schmidt, Heidi (Bill) Durbin, Todd (Jenna) Gable, Michelle (Dirk) Felker and Heather (Josh) Lacy; 10 great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and siblings Rachel Gable, Gary and Arlabeth Gable, Carolyn Outson and Vonie Hatch.

Bill was preceded in death by is bride of 64 years, Mary Ann; his son, Mike; his parents; brother Ted; his in-laws, Mom and Pop Outson, Jim Hatch, Cleta Mae Smith, Bill and Marty Outson and Dick Outson.

At the celebration of life gathering for Mary Ann last summer, Bill smiled as he looked around at this family and said, "This all started with a wink."
