Walter was a carpenter by trade and in his younger years, he was a wrestler, baseball player and manager. He had his first professional wrestling match on the night of January 23, 1912, coincidently it was the night of his daughter, Thelma's birth. Walter and Ruth lived in Linn Co., Iowa until about 1919 or 1920, when they left and moved to Greenwood, Clark Co., WI. They had acreage in Greenwood, and Walter cut down and cleared the land for the family farm. Life was hard for the family, the land was strewn with rocks, which had to be removed before crops could be planted. Walter and the neighbors did harvest the maple sap from the trees from which they made maple syrup.
Walter and Ruth divorced in the early 1930's. Soon after the divorce he removed to Holloway, Taylor Co., WI where he built a log house. Walter suffered a stroke in the early 1950's and he spent several months recuperating in the homes of his children in Washington, and California. But eventually went back to Wisconsin, living in the White Way Hotel in Owen, Clark Co., Wisconsin until he had his fatal heart attack on November 22, 1955. His body was taken to Linn Co., Iowa where he is buried with his parents and infant daughter, Velma Beatrice Blum at Lafayette Cemetery.
