"Samuel Newman married Elizabeth Ann Wise, August 11, 1832." (Ouachita Parish Marriage Records.)

"Samuel Newman married Mary Ann Austin, May 14, 1836." (Ouachita Parish Marriage Records.)

"Samuel Newman was born about 1812, in Warren County, Georgia. He was the son of Samuel and Mary Ann Lovett Newman. In 1818 Samuel amd family moved to Jefferson County, Mississippi, where they remained until 1823. From 1824 until 1827 Samuel and some of the family members were in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. Their next move was to Ouachita Parish, Louisiana in 1827.

"Samuel Newman first married Elizabeth Ann Wise, in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana in 1832, and they had one son, Jonathan Newman. It is possible that there was another son Samuel Wesley "Wes" born to them. After the death of Elizabeth Wise Newman, Samuel Newman second married Mary Ann Austin, May 19, 1836 in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. Samuel and Mary Ann had six children all born in Ouachita Parish.

"In the year 1851, Samuel and his family moved to Goliad, Texas. Sam's brother, the Rev. Jonathan Newman, was already there. The family lived there until 1857. Meanwhile, back in Freestone County, Sam's cousin, Truman L. Newman and his nephew A. C. Newman had homesteaded two tracts of land in 1856 and received their title from the land office in 1857. A. C. Newman transferred his land and title to his Uncle Sam Newman in 1858. The Newman family remained on this property until 1883."

"Samuel and his family raised horses, cows, and crops, such as corn, cotton, potatoes, tomatoes, etc. to fed the family and stock. Sam also drove a freight wagon from Jefferson, Texas to Brownwood, Texas to support his family. The wheels of his wagon were as tail as a man. Sam Newman appears on the 1870 census of Freestone County, Texas and by 1880 he is dead. Family members say he is buried in the Old Zion Cemetery close to Donie, Texas, but no one can remember exactly where the grave is located since it was marked by rocks. In 1859, Samuel's son Jonathan Newman joined his father in Freestone County."

"Elizabeth Ann Wise and Mary Ann Austin, the wives of Samuel Newman, were first cousins - their mothers being the children of John Ferguson and wife, Mary."
