Frantisek was born in Bohemia, probably Plzen, now part of the Czech Republic. His father's name was Joseph. He became a naturalized citizen on 10 Oct 1868.

Frantisek married Katerina Broz [also Brush, Brosh], daughter of Vaclav and Barbora Broz, in about 1858. They lived and farmed in the Solon area and raised six children: Anna, Mary, James Frank, Frances, Barbara, and Joseph, all born in Solon between 1859 and 1872.
