Daughter of Hezekiah and Mary (Sweet) Matteson, Sarah married her cousin David Matteson in Rhode Island in 1771. During the Revolutionary War years, David and Sarah moved to Shaftsbury and Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont where David was a Sergeant in the Vermont Militia.

Sarah was the mother of Charlotte, Barbara, Cynthia, Freeborn, Anthe, Noel, Luther, Clarissa, David J., Alvah, and Charles. After David died, Sarah moved west to Fredonia, NY and lived with her son, David J. Matteson, and his family. She was a member of the Fredonia Baptist Church and lived a long life, passing away in her 94th year.
