Obituary.
James Decker, one of the pioneer settlers of this county, who had been in failing health for many months, passed to spirit life at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 4th, 1903, aged 86 years 4 months and 27 days. The funeral services were held at the house at 1 p.m. Monday, Rev. W.H. Witter, his pastor, officiating.
The deceased was born February 7, 1817, in Bradford county, Pennsylvania, near the village of Athens. His parents moved to Ohio in 1830, when the son was 13 years of age. Mr. Decker came to Illinois in 1836, and to Henry county in 1841. He first located in Pike county and there he married Miss Sarah Edwards, a daughter of Rev. Edwards, a descendant of the noted Johnathan Edwards, in January , 1837, and to them were born five sons and three daughters, of whom George, James, Samuel, Mary Catherine, Anna and Elisha, survive both their parents: Elizabeth and William having passed away after having arrived to mature age and both leaving large family. George resides in Jewel county, Kansas; James in Williamsburg, Kansas; Samuel in Chandler, Oklahoma; Mary Catherine, wife of William Peterson in Coffeyville, Kansas; Anna, wife of Joseph Freeman near Knoxville, Illinois; Elisha in Homewood, Kansas. The mother and wife passed away March 24, 1866. In 1869 he was united in marriage with Mrs. Emeline Randall who died July 24, 1883. The third marriage was to Mrs. Ellen Stewart which took place January 29, 1884. When Mr. Decker came to Henry county in 1841, he settled near Spring Creek and in 1843 purchased a farm on which he took up his residence in what is now known as East Cambridge and retired from the farm about 1878 and took up his residence in the village of Cambridge. At the age of 21 years he became a member of the Protestant Methodist Episcopal church and remained a faithful follower of Christ until he was called to a higher life. The writer has been a neighbor to him for the past fifty-two years and will say that a more conscientious person than he was during the long years of our acquaintance we never met. His word was as good as his bond and he was a kind husband and father and highly respected by all who knew him. He was laid to rest in the Cambridge cemetery and the mother of the children was brought from the former place of burial and laid to rest by his side. Only four of the children were present at the burial, George, Samuel, Anna and Mary Catherine, to sympathize with his sorrow stricken wife.
