He graduated from the US Military Academy in 1840, was commissioned an officer the 3rd Infantry, took part in the Seminole Indian War and served in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he resigned and was commissioned Captain in the Confederate Corps. He was with the forces first collected at Manassas Junction, was promoted Colonel chief of staff and Adjutant-General of the Army. He was with the forces at the battles of Corinth, Shiloh and was promoted Brigadier General in April, 1862. During the Kentucky campaign, he served as chief of staff for General Bragg for the defense of Charleston. In May, 1864, he was assigned the command of the 3rd Military District of South Carolina. After the war, he became chief of the general staff of the Cuban insurgent army in command of the army of independence. In 1870, he returned to the United States and was editor of the New York Mining Journal.
