From the research of Louis N. Barnes:

Civil War Records list a Joseph R. Bunting as a Private in the 3rd Virginia Calvary in January 1861. This unit was from Charles City County and Williamsburg. Because it is known that Joseph Bunting was attending the College of William and Mary, this Joseph Bunting is believed to be the same Joseph Bunting who enlisted May 27, 1861 as a Private into the Company I (York Rangers), 32nd Regiment, at Williamburg. At his enlistment Joseph was described as having dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and standing five foot 3.9 inches tall. His age was given as 19 years. Comments by Bryan S. Godfrey (1973- ), stepson of his great-great-grandson, Nelson Cornell Watkins, Jr. (1938-2012):

It is through Joseph Bunting that I am distantly related to my stepfather, his paternal family, and many other natives of his hometown of Poquoson, VA, because Joseph's parents were both from the Eastern Shore of Virginia (across Chesapeake Bay from Poquoson where he lived) and 1/16 of my ancestry was from there. Because there is a marked grave for Joseph's mother, Ann Topping Bunting, there is a FAG.com memorial for her, but we cannot have one for his father, William "Smith" Bunting, because his burial place is uncertain. While I have pasted his mother's ancestry on her memorial page, I am posting his father's almost-certain ancestry below. Note: it is not proven who his father's parents were, but because of his name being Smith and process of elimination among the first few generations of Buntings in Accomack Co., VA, it seems a virtual certainty his father was either the Smith Bunting who died ca. 1786 or one of his brothers.
