Nelvin D. 'LeRoy' Corn, 92, of Independence, Kansas passed away Friday, January 30, 2004 at the Heatherwood Estate Nursing Home.
LeRoy was born June 14, 1911 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Arthur Wellington and Ida Kelsey (Littlejohn) Corn. LeRoy grew up in Cherryvale and attended school in rural Cherryvale at Drumcreek Rural School. On November 2, 1935, LeRoy married Ruth Alene Carpenter in Independence, Kansas. They made their home in Cherryvale until 1962 when they moved to Independence.
LeRoy owned and operated the C & C Bakery in Independence, Kansas for 14 years until 1972. Prior to that, he and his wife operated several other bakeries in Cherryvale and the surrounding area. Following his retirement from the Bakery, he was a U.S. Mail Route Driver for 10 years. In addition, LeRoy was Chief of Police in Cherryvale in the 1950's.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Alene Corn of the home in Independence; five sons, Charles Corn of Stonington, Connecticut, Larry Corn of Brentwood, Tennessee, David Corn,Terry Corn and Danny Corn all of Independence, Kansas; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Linda) Wilkerson of Marco Island, Florida and Mrs. George (Elaine) Glines of Independence, Kansas; one brother, George Corn of Rayville, Missouri; sixteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gary.
Visitation hours for LeRoy will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 3, 2004 and on Wednesday, February 4, 2004 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Nelvin D. 'LeRoy' Corn will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 5, 2004 at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Chapel with Reverend Leon Hendrix, Pastor of the Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery, Cherryvale, Kansas.
