PETITION FOR APPOINTMENT OF ADMINISTRATION
TO THE HON. MATTHEW P GARVEY JUDGE OF PROBATE FOR THE COUNTY OF CASS IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN
THE PETITION OF ORSON RUDD, who is of the age of twenty-one years and upwards, of the county of Cass respectfully shews:
That Elizabeth Cox late of Penn Township in said county of Cass departed this life in said township of Penn
on the ___ day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six not leaving any last
Will and Testament, as your petitioner is informed and verily believes.
That said deceased was, at and immediately previous to her death, an inhabitant of said County of Cass and that
she was possessed of Real and personal Estate, situate and being in the County of Cass to be administered,
and that the estimated value thereof is the sun of Fifteen Hundred Dollars or thereabout, as your petitioner is
informed and verily believes.
And your petitioner further shews that the names and residence of the heirs at law of said deceased, and other persons interested in her estate are as follows:
Hiram Cox, Mary Fergerson, Jane Atwood, Eliza Giffin, Nancy Smith, John Cox- all children of said deceased and all reside in Cass County Michigan.
Samuel Cox son of said deceased is dead leaving two children Ellen and Norman W. Cox, the first named about fourteen years of age, the other aged about
twelve years, residents of Cass County Michigan.
[NOTE- As his wife was now widowed, the estate by-passes her and her children are heirs. KG]
Tacy Bronson daughter of said deceased is dead, leaving a child, to wit, Dell Bronson aged about fifteen
years, resident of Cass County Michigan. James Bronson son of said deceased, residing in Cass County Michigan.
(I presume this means James is not a child- but of adult age. KG)
(NOTE- the 1860 census enumerates Isabel Bronson, age 10, in the household of Nelson and Eliza Cox Giffin. Possibly the "Dell" listed here; the age is correct. KG)
Your petitioner therefore prays that all persons interested in said estate may be duly cited as required by law, and as to this court may seem proper, and
that administration of said estate may be granted to your petitioner and that other and further order and proceedings may be had in the premises as may
be required by the statutes in such case made and provided.

From relative Susan Cree:
Elizabeth Conway who married John Cox in Pa. ca. 1816 (told as Church of Christ, Philadelphia. They are believed to have been from New Jersey originally. Several children were born Pa. and Ohio: Samuel, Hiram, Mary (Fergerson), Jane (Atwood), John, Tacy (Bronson), Nancy (Thompson Smith), James Neil, Eliza (Giffin) (born Indiana)......This family is my Brick Wall and I am chasing every clue. This family was believed Quaker but no records have been found. This family ended up in the first wave of settlers to south western Michigan around 1834-37 as they were in the 1837 census (without the father John).
==============================
More from Susan Cree:
I am searching for early Indiana and Western Michigan pioneers, John and
Elizabeth (Conway) COX. Elizabeth and her children located in Newberg and Penn Twp, Cass County and Elizabeth and several of her off-spring are
buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery. They came to Southwestern Michigan before 1834 as one of the daughters was married in this year in Cass Co.
John and Elizabeth (Conway) COX's children:
Believed
Mary (Ferguson) ca. 1806
Church (Cox) ca 1808
Nancy (Smith) ca 1810
Samuel (Cox) ca 1811
Hiram (Cox) ca 1819
James Neal (Cox)ca 1820 (Not listed in mother's probate. KG)
Tacy (Bronson) ca 1824
John (Cox) ca 1827
Jane (Atwood) ca 1829
Eliza (Brooks) ca 1833 (Note- I have her as Giffin, not found a Brooks spouse. KG)
Elizabeth COX's last child (Eliza) was born in 1833 in Indiana and John is
believed killed in the Black Hawk War, Summer of 1832. Elizabeth would
have been carrying Eliza at that time. I know the "fighting" doesn't fit but
many of the other known historic items do fit.
This family was from Philadelphia, Pa with Charles and sons
Paul|Samuel|John|William COX playing pivotal roles in the Revolution.
After a generational stop in the Mifflin|Juanita Counties area of Central Pa., many of this COX family moved on west to settle in Guernsey Co., OHIO,
Morgan Co., INDIANA, and ILLINOIS and MICHIGAN
Any help with this family would be gratefully received as I have been searching for them since 1961.
