Mrs. Angus Crites, prominent Kern County matron and a resident of Bakersfield for more than 37 years, passed away last evening after a protracted illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday, February 24, at Flickinger-Digier funeral parlors, the Reverend John Murdoch officiating, interment to take place in the family plot in Union Cemetery.
Mrs. Crites, as Mary Ellen Kirkpatrick, was born in 1876 at Dry Run, Franklin County, Pa. She resided in Bakersfield for a time and returned to her home in the east where she was united in marriage to Mr. Crites, one of Kern county's prominent oil men and an outstanding citizen.
In addition to the husband, there survive two daughters, Mrs. Hugh M. Allen and Mrs. Simeon Zane, both residents of Maricopa. A sister, Mrs. Minnie Wolf, lives in St. Louis, St. Louis County, MO, and there are two brothers, Newton Kirkpatrick of New Cumberland, Cumberland County, Pa., and Dr. Harry Kirkpatrick of Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pa. The deceased was a cousin also of Mr. M. P. Flickinger. She leaves, too, one granddaughter, Suzanne Zane.
For many years Mrs. Crites was active in the work of the Presbyterian Church and in the social life of the city. She was widely known on the West Side where her husband's interests are and in Bakersfield she claimed a large circle of friends who learn of her passing with deep regret.
