ANGUS J. CRITES, NOTED OIL MAN, TAKEN BY DEATH
Angus J. Crites, 74, recognized as one of the leading independent oil producers in the country died Sunday morning in Mercy Hospital.
Extremely prominent in the petroleum and financial interests of Kern County, Mr. Crites was a member of the honored and influential family founded in Kern County in the early 1850's by his father, Angus McLeod Crites.
Until the time of his death, Mr. Crites kept active his interests in the oil industry, serving as manager of his Anchor Oil Company. He also was vice-president and director of the Independent Petroleum Association, which was holding its nineteenth annual convention in San Antonio at the time of his death.
He also was a member of the board of directors of the Division of Oil and Gas, and for many years was a member of the board of directors of the Bank of America, East Bakersfield Branch, and the Kern County Historical Society.
Early in life he gained a wide reputation as an efficient and successful superintendent in the Kern River Oil fields, in which his father held a large interest.
Born in Bakersfield April 26, 1874, he passed the years of his boyhood on the family ranch near Tehachapi, and when a public school was established at Keene, he became one of the first students.
In company with his father he engaged in mining in the Caliente valley, also in the vicinity of Sageland and Red Rock, and at the age of 23, entered the employ of the Jewett and Blodgett Oil Company.

sociation with the company he helped to develop the oil fields in the Sunset, Hazelton and Maricopa districts.
When 30 years of age he became connected with the Peerless Oil Company, first acting as superintendent of their lands at Coalinga, then coming to the Kern river field as superintendent at Oil Center.
The Peerless, under his management, became of the most productive properties in the entire field and soon was equipped with an air lift system and other modern improvements.
Mr. Crites married the former Mary Kirkpatrick, a native of Dry Run, Pa., and for years resided on the Peerless lease. Of the union, two daughters, Dorothea and Catherine, were born. Both daughters, who now are Mrs. Dorothea Allen and Mrs. Catherine Zane, live in Maricopa.
Funeral services have been set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, in the Masonic Temple. Interment will be in Union Cemetery in the family plot.
Pallbearers will be Fred Owen, Marvin Berry, Ned Barlow, Everett St. Clair, J. O. Reavis and Frank Keppi.
Honorary pallbearers are Ernie Blanck, Harry Hopkins, L. P. St. Clair, George Haberfelde, Ed Haberfelde, H. J. Brandt, Sam Dyer, Jake Lahman, Hugh Jewett, Lawrence Weill and Jack Couley.
Besides two daughters, survivors include two grandchildren, Sidney Hugh Allen and Suzanne Zane, Maricopa; two brothers, Arthur S., Bakersfield, and Jerry Chicago, and two nieces, Jane Crites, Baltimore, and Mrs. Harry Conron, Bakersfield.
