One year after giving birth to her first child Leetie, Paralee died, aged 17 yrs. Baby Leetie was then raised by her maternal grandparents and is listed with them on both the 1910 and 1920 Census records. Although Fleet remarried in 1914, Leetie remained with her maternal Grandparents.
Oklahoma began filing death records in Oct 1908. However, it was not mandatory that these records be filed until 1917. Because death records were not required for identification as they are today, not all records prior to 1940 were placed on file consistently.
Arkansas Vital Records has death records dating from 1 Feb 1914 through the present. A limited number of records are available for deaths occurring between 1881 and 1914, in Little Rock and Fort Smith. The Arkansas History Commission keeps an alphabetical listing of deaths in Arkansas dating from 1914 through 1949, but they do not have the actual death records.
Since daughter Leetie May was born in Oklahoma, it is thought perhaps Paralee died there, but this is not certain, even though her parents were living there in May 1910, 3 months after family members say Paralee died.
By Apr 1910, Paralee's husband Fleet had returned to Arkansas and appears on that year's census as a "single" "hired man". By Jan 1920, Paralee's parents are back in Arkansas.
With limited records to confirm Paralee's final resting place, it will be presumed she is among family at Young-Gravelly.
Paralee is my daughters' paternal Grand Aunt.
