DR. L. RUSSELL,
Who Has Relatives Here, Dead At Washington
Notification has been received by W.E. Russell, night yardmaster in this city for the P.C.C. St. L. of the death of his uncle, Dr. L. Russell, at Washington, D.C., where he was medical examiner in the pension department.
Dr. Russell was a son of the late Dr. Benjamin F. Russell, who was a well known practitioner of Jennings county and died at a ripe age. In many things Dr. L. Russell was a remarkable man, being highly educated and a profound thinker. He was about 65 years of age and died of paralysis, dying two days after he was stricken, without becoming conscious.
At a tender age he was sent to Hanover College and from there went to Asbury University, Greencastle. The late Judge C.L. Dunham, who was then in Congress, took a great liking to young Russell and recommended him for a cadetship at Westpoint. He served there two years and not liking a military life returned home and began the study of medicine. His father sent him to Jeffersonian Medical College, Philadelphia, where he graduated before he was 21, having to paste the number on each of his shoes to say he was over 21, a rule required. the he should be of that age. After returning home he located at Owensboro and there went into the army as a surgeon, being an intimate friend of the late General Harrison."
When the war was over he married Mrs. House (Howse), on whose plantation the battle of Stone River, Tenn. was fought.of which a While living there he was sent to the Tennessee Legislature from Rutherford county. During Cleveland's first administration he was appointed to the position he was filling at the time of his death. His first wife died several years ago and Dr. Russell re-married. A wife and five children survive him. There are three sisters still living one of whom is Mrs. Burdesall, of Hanover, and the other two live at Fairfield, Ill.
Dr. Russell's birthplace was Westport, Oldham county,Ky., and he was well known throughout, Jennings, Jefferson and the Eastern part of Clark counties. He was buried at Washington.
