Civil War Union Army Brevet Brigadier General. The son of Major General Jacob Brown of War of 1812 fame, he joined the United States Army with a commission of Major and Assistant Paymaster on September 5, 1849. He would go on to serve in the Paymasters Department for the next thirty three years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Deputy Paymaster General during the Civil War. He was detailed for a time as Chief Paymaster of the Department of the Missouri, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on October 15, 1867 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He was promoted to Colonel on July 28, 1866, and to Brigadier General and Chief Paymaster of the Army on June, 1880. He served a year and a half in that duty, and was honorably retired on February 6, 1882.
