Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was appointed a Lieutenant in the 1st US Cavalry, August 5, 1861. He was Major Aid de Camp of volunteers in May, 1863, appointed Colonel of the 1st New York Mounted Rifles in September 1864 and remained in command until the end of the war. He was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March, 1865. Remaining the Army, he saw action in the Indian Wars as Major of the 5th US Cavalry in 1879, Lieutenant Colonel of the 8th Cavalry in 1890 and Colonel of the 7th Cavalry to 1894. At the outbreak of the Spanish- American War, he promoted Brigadier General and retained the title until retiring in March, 1899. Union Major General Edwin Vose "Bull" Sumner, was his father.
