Mrs. Bertie Irene Short, 78, wife of Lewis M. Short, of Alma, died early Friday morning at the University of Virginia Hospital, where she had been a patient for five days. She had been an invalid for eight years.
She was the daughter of the late William and Jennie Cummings Campbell. Mr. and Mrs. Short would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary February 20.
She was a loyal and active member of St. Peter's EUB Church.
Besides her husband, Lewis M. Short, she is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Carrie Short, of Alma, Mrs. John Hoffman, Hagerstown, Md., Mrs. H.J. Judd, Shenandoah, Mrs. Marion Sniegoski, Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Granville Batman, Stanley; three sons, Carl Short, of Elkton, Clark Short, of Stanley, and Cecil Short, of Alexandria.
She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, and eighteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, a sister and a brother.
The body was removed from the Warren G. Kyger Funeral Home to the Shenandoah EUB Church at 1 p.m., Sunday to lie in state until 2 o'clock when funeral services were conducted by the Rev. John W. Aleshire, Rev. C.F. Hickle and Rev. P.W. Fisher. Burial took place in the Rest Haven Cemetery.
