Jay D. Thurgood passed away on the 15th of March, 2002 in West Valley City, Utah. He struggled valiantly for more than six years with the debilitating disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Born 29 June, 1931 in Seattle, WA to Don J. Thurgood and Lula Maud Price. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from June 1951 to June 1954 when he met Vangel R Frazier of Corpus Christi, TX. They were married 10 Sept, 1954 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and had six children.

An avid motorcyclist, he loved to ride and race with his friends. As a pioneer of the Bee's Motorcycle Club, he helped establish and conduct the first six years of the Widowmaker Hill- climbs and also helped to organize the Utah Sportsman Riders Association then served as its first chairman.

A graduate of BYU in 1959 with a BES degree in Mechanical Engineering, he worked as an Aerospace Engineer for 31 years in the solid propellant rocket motor industry; being employed by Thiokol, Hercules, TRW, and the Navy's Fleet Ballistic Missile System. He retired in July 1991 as director of the Engineering Division of the Naval Plant Branch Representative Office at the Bacchus Works Hercules Plant. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served with his wife as ordinance workers in the Jordan River Temple for six years. His avocation as an auto mechanic provided car repair services to his family and neighbors.

Survived by his wife, Vangel; sister, Merleen Herbert (Jay M.); brothers, Paul D. (Joan), Richard D. (Penny); daughter, June Miller (Roy); sons, David (Kim), Kent (Medite), Brent (Julie), Carl (Suzanne); 16 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Ma-rie; and sister, Beverly Adams (Ray).

A funeral will be 12 noon Mon. 18 March, 2002, LDS chapel, 4605 W. West Point Dr. (4645 S), West Valley City, UT. Family will meet with friends and neighbors one hour prior to services. He will be interred at the Utah State Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 17111 S. Camp Williams Rd, Riverton, UT. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests a donation to your favorite charity.
