Edna Shurman, daughter of George and Anna Statia (Bonn) Schurman, was born January 28, 1916 on a farm in Minnehaha County near Garretson, SD and grew up there. She received her education at Garretson School District # 136.
She was united in marriage with Vernus Phillips at Elkton, SD on February 8, 1939. The couple lived at Larchwood, IA for five years. They moved to Garretson where they remained for 30 years prior to moving to Sioux Falls, SD. She worked at Sioux Valley Hospital there. In 1974 they moved to Lake Poinsett near Estelline, SD. She worked at Estelline Nursing Home until retiring in 1987. She moved to Brookings in 1993.
Edna was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. She loved to play the piano. She played for church, Sunday School and choir at many of the churches she attended through the years. She also taught Sunday School.
Grateful for having shared her life are five sons, George Phillips (Vivian), Watertown, SD, Gerry Phillips (LeAnne), Larchwood, Gene Phillips (Margie), Madison, SD, Glenn Phillips (Cheri), Champaign, IL, Gary Phillips (Glenette), Hyde Park, UT; a daughter, Gail Madler (Barney), Rapid City, SD; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Smith (Fred), Windom, MN, Georgia May, Mountain Home, AR; two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Edmundson (Milton), Garretson, Irene Shurman, Sioux Falls; a brother-in-law, Jim Bredeson (Gladys), Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Vernus, on June 30, 1977; a granddaughter, Shari de Wit; her parents; a brother, Robert Shurman; and two sisters, Gladys Bredeson and Ada DeSchepper.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at George Boom Funeral Home following the funeral service prior to leaving for the committal service.
