Carol Iola Behrents was born January 26, 1916 in Chicago to Dr. Olav S. Behrents and Ida Johnson Behrents. Olav was a Norwegian immigrant who came to the United States in 1893 specifically to become a medical missionary. He and Ida had been in Kioshan, Honan, China from 1908 until their first furlough in 1915. While living in Chicago, Olav studied more medicine and spoke about the mission field to many congregations. At this time their daughter Carol was born, the third child but the first born in the US.
They traveled back and forth between China and the US several times. Carol's early school education was at the American School in Kikungshan, a school for the children of missionaries in China, high in the mountains where the family often spent the summer months for respite from heat and disease.

The entire Behrents family returned from the mission field for the last time in 1927. They settled in Three Rivers, MI.
Carol married Robert S. McElroy on June 29, 1956 in Valparaiso, IN. They lived for many years in Addison, IL, a suburb of Chicago. Bob was initially in a band but traveled for many years with an entertainment show with puppets, ventriloquism "dummies" and balloon characters. He delighted his many nieces and nephews with private showings whenever they came to visit. Carol was his beautiful assistant!

Bob and Carol retired to Norman, OK and remained there the rest of their lives. Bob died July 3, 1987 in Norman and Carol died 20 years later on March 21, 2007.
