Frances White Chittum, 90, of Sunnyside Retirement Community, Harrisonburg, passed away peacefully Aug. 31, 2010. She was born June 7, 1920, in Norfolk, to Bernard and Grace White.

She moved with her family to Augusta County, attended Beverley Manor School, returned to Norfolk to complete her high school education at Maury High School and then moved to Staunton to be with her family and to work for Home Beneficial Insurance Co. She was married to Elmer Allen Chittum in 1948. She started working for Massanetta Springs in 1965, and in 1970 moved to Massanetta with her husband and sons, Allen, Greg and Mark. She retired from Massanetta Springs in 1985 and continued to live there until 1995, when she moved with her husband to Sunnyside Retirement Community.

Her community activities included garden club, bridge club, civic club and the Home Extension Homemakers in Staunton, and she was an active member of the Cottage Owners Association, Friends of Massanetta and the Staff Alumni Association at Massanetta Springs. She also served as an election official for the electoral board for 20 years. Her love and devotion to the Lord, Jesus Christ, was evidenced by her many years of service, which included membership and Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church in Staunton, her membership and service as elder and Clerk of Session at Massanutten Presbyterian Church in Penn Laird, her 25 years of service as an employee at Massanetta Springs and her many years of service after her retirement as a volunteer at Massanetta and Sunnyside. She was a lifetime honorary member of the Presbyterian Women of the Church.

She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and she enjoyed camping and fishing with family, flower gardening and reading.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Bernard White Jr. and Walter White, both of Staunton; Elmer Chittum, her husband of 53 years; and her son, Gregory N. Chittum.

She is survived by her sons, Allen S. Chittum of Elkton and Mark W. Chittum of Potomac, Md.; her daughters-in-law, Betty Chittum of Elkton and Holly Chittum of Hershey, Pa.; her grandchildren, Joseph Allen Chittum of Potomac and Christina Myers of Elkton; her great-grandchild, Gabriel Myers of Elkton; her sisters-in-law, Nellie White and Virginia White, both of Staunton; her brother-in-law, Earl Chittum of Fishersville; her sister-in-law, Marjorie Chittum of Fishersville; her sisters-in-law, Pauline Austin and Ruth Brooks of Steeles Tavern; and cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Meredith Chapel at Sunnyside.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the fellowship fund at Sunnyside Presbyterian Home.
