Harry was the son of Robert C. and Eveline Boatright of East Point, Ga. He was raised in East Point and attended William A. Russell High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was injured during a battle with the Japanese when he did not pull his hand away fast enough after loading a shell into the chamber of the large gun. The gunnery cannon fired and the violent movement took off two of his fingers. He was not aware of his injury until a ship mate below him yelled up "BOATRIGHT! YOU'RE BLEEDING! He calmly wrapped his wounded hand and walked to the ships sick bay.

He was married to Joyce King of Atlanta with whom he had one daughter, Linda. He was a Printer by trade.
