Betty was a daughter of John Rodgers and Elizabeth Bissett. She was born in Liff, Forfarshire, Dundee, Scotland. Her siblings included:

David (married Susan Wolford, Susan Specht Cable)
Catherine (married George Berry)
Agnes (married Thomas Anderson)
James (married Sarah Bell)
Robert

When Betty was sixteen, she had a son by Patrick Peter Small, a local innkeeper and coachman at Huntly Castle. They were not forced to marry, but Small had to pay a fine for both of them. Court records detailing this can be read online if one searches for "Patrick Peter Small and Betty Rodgers."

Betty passed away at the age of twenty-one, when her son William was only four. He later immigrated to Buckstown, Pennsylvania, with Betty's brother David.
