Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church at 4 p.m. Friday, August 20, for Mrs. Mary Averett Watts, 80, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Willie Garr, Thursday afternoon after a lengthy illness. Last rites were conducted by the Rev. Fred S. Flurry, church pastor, assisted by the Rev. H.H. McBride and Rev. Alwin Stokes. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery.
Mrs. Watts was born in Alabama on September 19, 1867, and moved to Louisiana when she was a young girl. She was married in 1884 to the late J.R. Watts, Sr., Winn Parish farmer and merchant, who died in 1925. Mrs. Watts would have been 81 years of age on September 19. She had been in poor health for some time.
Surviving are four sons, J.R. Watts and Kenneth Watts, Sr., of Winnfield; A.J. Watts of Camden, Ark., and P.R. Watts, Port Arthur, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Willie Gaar of Winnfield, Mrs. W.J. Jackson of Orange, Texas, and Mrs. Ina Rushing of Corpus Christi, Texas; four brothers, W.O. Averett of Winnfield, J.R. Averett of Hallsville, Texas, D.E. Averett of Gilmer, Texas and W.W. Averett of Shreveport; two sisters, Mrs. C.E. Sompayrac of Winnfield, and Mrs. J.W. Baker of Pocahontus, Miss.; a number of grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Grandsons of Mrs. Watts who served as pallbearers were: James Watts, Joe Watts, Kenneth Watts, Jr., and Richard Hopper Watts of Winnfield, Abner Watts of Chicago, Ill., Prentiss Ray Watts of Oklahoma City, Fenwick Leigh Watts of Port Arthur, Texas, and W.O. Jackson of Port Arthur.
