Margaret (Peggy) Atwood Billings Bauchspies (79) passed this life on February 19th, 2010. She was born in Jacksonville, FL on December 28, 1930 the daughter of the late Maurice F. and Margaret Tully Atwood of Jacksonville Beach, FL.

Peggy was the wife of the late Commander Randall K. Billings USN who was killed in an aircraft accident on January 1, 1970 while serving as the aircraft wing commander in the aircraft carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CV-64). He was on his third combat tour to Vietnam.

She was preceded in death by her stepson Eric L. Bauchspies, and son Michael K. Billings.

She is survived by her husband of thirty-one years Captain Rollin (Bud ) L. Bauchspies, Jr. USN (Ret) of Neptune Beach, FL; three children: James W. Billings of San Diego, CA, David H. Billings (Dorothy ) of La Mesa, CA, Laura A. Billings of Pittsboro, NC, and the widow of Michael Billings (Misty) Billings of Soquel CA. Peggy had five grandchildren: Jasper, Noah, Hannah, Lindsey and Kelley Billings.

In addition Peggy is survived by her two brothers William M. Atwood (Margaret) of Bridgeville, DE; and Robert T. Atwood (Pauletta ) of Sea Island, GA and Atlanta; and two nieces and two nephews : Marella (Scott) Thorell and Molly (Michael)Taylor; and W. David Atwood and John (Tara) Atwood.

Peggy graduated from St. Paul's Catholic High School in Jacksonville. In her senior year she was a Gator Bowl princess. She attended Barry College in Miami, FL. For 18 years she was a Navy wife while her husband served as an aircraft carrier fighter pilot on both coasts and attended Navy Test Pilot School at the Patuxant River Naval Air Station.

After the death of her husband, and a widow at 39 with four children, Peggy returned to the Jacksonville Beaches, and made her home in Neptune Beach.

Peggy met her future husband, Captain Bud Bauchspies, when he was in command of a ship home-ported at Naval Station Mayport, FL in 1972.

They became engaged in 1976, and were married at the chapel at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL in 1978 where he was then stationed on the staff of the Chief of Naval Education and Training.

In 1980, Bud retired from the Navy, and Peggy and Bud returned from Pensacola to their home in Neptune Beach where they were able to assist in the care of both pairs of their elderly parents who lived at the beaches.

They enjoyed the activities of various religious, fraternal, and military organizations at the beaches, and became very active at the local and state levels in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). Peggy had been a breast cancer survivor since December 2001.

In January 2006, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After surgery in February, she recovered from the disease and was cancer free for 3 years and 7 months which placed her in the 2 percent of pancreatic cancer patients who survive this period of time. In August 2009, medical tests confirmed return of the disease. Unfortunately, Medical Science has not progressed to the point to successfully combat the disease.

Peggy elected to enter the care of the Northeast Florida Community Hospice first at home, and then at the Anne and David McGraw Hospice Center for Caring located on the Mayo Clinic campus in Jacksonville, FL after which she returned to her home in Neptune Beach home for homecare with hospice.

Peggy was a friend to all who knew her. She was devoted to her family, her church, and to her country. She was always willing to help those who needed her help. With her friendly smile and cheery words, she became the 'Peg of my heart' to many. She will be missed.

A Vigil Service will be held for Peggy at Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, 3600 Third Street South, Jacksonville Beach, FL at 7:00 PM Thursday, February 25, 2010.

A Memorial Mass for Peggy will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 224 N. Fifth Street, Jacksonville Beach, FL at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 26, 2010 with the Reverend William A. Kelly conducting the service. The ladies of the church will provide a luncheon for the family and guests in the parish hall after the Mass, and the family will greet guests.

Peggy's ashes will be interred in a grave site in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a date to be determined. Bud's ashes will join Peggy's when his day comes to join his bride, and they will join his parents and two brothers at Arlington.

Peggy's last days were made as comfortable as possible by the dedicated staff and other personnel at Northeast Florida Community Hospice, and later at home by her three 24/7 care companions Jan, Norma, and Anne. These individuals are 'the angels on earth', and enough cannot be said of their loving care and devotion to Peggy.

It is requested that memorials to Peggy be made either to the Northeast Florida Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 or to a charity of your choice.
