Robert James Miller (R.J.) was born in Hanover, in Jo Davis county, Ill., on May 16, 1883 to John and Mary Ann Steele Miller.

He spent his youth on a farm near Ireton, la. in Sioux county with his 2 brothers and 4 sisters where his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. Q. Miller had established their home. He attended a county rural school and the Ireton High School and graduated from Brown’s Business College in Sioux City. After teaching 4 years in the rural schools of Sioux County he entered the State University of Iowa in 1906. At the same time he attended the Iowa City Academy to earn additional high school credits. He received his B.A. degree in 1912 and M.A. in 1924.

Mr. Miller was a man of varied occupations. He served as Superintendent of Schools in various towns in Iowa, including Lone Tree. He became Field Auditor for the Standard Oil Company; Superintendent of Chautauqua; Supervisor of the Federal census; established County Boards for the Salvation Army in Minnesota and the Dakotas and work as a Salesman. He was a Veteran of World War I and during World War II he served as Expeditor at the Iowa Ordnance Plant at Burlington.

He married Pearle Burr of Lone Tree, June 21, 1944, at Iowa City. They lived at Burlington 4 years while Mr. Miller was with the United States Employment Service. In 1948 they moved to Iowa City where he was later employed at the City Assessor’s Office as Fieldman until his retirement.

Mr. Miller joined the United Presbyterian Church at Ireton, la., as a youth. By transfer he became a charter member of the United Presbyterian Church of Lone Tree.

He was a life member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association and of the State Historical Society of Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Pearle, and 4 nieces and 3 nephews. His parents, 2 brothers, Dr. George E. and Richard S. and 4 sisters, Jane Irvin, Elizabeth Deming, Phoebe Taylor and Margaret Miller preceded him in death.

Casket bearers w ere Lorren Burr, Cleo Burr, Wayne Burr, James Stock, Howard Stock, Duane Stock. The soloists were Margarete Ann Smothers and Jerry Musser.
