NOTE:#46 GABRIEL NEIL SMITHER-William and Elizabeth's oldest boy Gabe born Dec 9 1843 Oxford Lafayette Co Ms. He was probably named for his GGrandfather Gabriel (or his Uncle Gabriel) combined with his mother's maiden name of Neill-served in Confederate Army-enlisted 17y Mar 10 1862 at Oxford Ms for one year. Less than a month later he reenlisted for 3y or the duration of the war. He served with 11th Ms Infantry Regiment Co G. Lamar Rifles. He participated Lee's Va campaign-during 1862 present at 7Pines 2days, Gaine's farm, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, Freeman's Ford, Thoroughfare Gap, Second Bull Run 2days, Boonsborough, and Sharpsburg/Antietam 2days, where he was wounded 2nd. 1863 he fought Williamsport, Falling Waters, and Bristow Station. 1864 he fought The Wilderness 2days, Tally's Mills, Spotsylvania, then went into the hospital in Richmond for a month while suffering from dysentery-retd to fight at Weldon Railroad (where the second day he was again wounded), Davis' farm, Jones' farm, and Hatcher's Run. He was paroled on May 18 1865 at Grenada Ms, after the surrender of CSA. There is a story of him "that after the Gettysburg campaign (he was out sick during 2days of Gettysburg) the army was worn out and exhausted from continual marching and fighting, with spirits at a correspondingly low ebb, Gabe brushed up by the side of our band leader and said, "Stewart by blood, play Dixie." This was done and spirits rising, started a cheer which did the whole army good." My mother has a picture of him on his CW mule. He m Oxford Jan 30 1867 Sarah Wolf (see Wolf family)
6. 1880 census he was lease farming Township #9 of Lafayette and worth $300. After his father's death he moved his family to Jethro Franklin Co Ar-Feb 10 1883 homesteaded 160ac described as 32 11N 27W. They had 10children. Her grandchildren called her the "Little Grandma." She would often be seen sitting and crocheting. He was JP Walker Township, a Democrat, and served as a deacon in the Church of Christ. He suffered in his later years from chronic rhuematism in ankles/feet. He d Ozark Franklin Co Nov 23 1919 75y. She suffered in her later years from chronic indigestion and neuralgia. She d Mulberry Franklin Co July 12 1923 73y. They are both buried in the Hight Cemetery in Mulberry Ark.
