"The Veteran Editor of the Hollidaysburg Register Joins the Great Majority
David Over, the Nestor of Blair county journalism, died at his home in Holldiaysburg at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, of diseases incident to advanced years, after an illness of some six months. Deceased was born at Bedford, Pa., April 5, 1825. He received an education in the public schools and learned the printing trade. When the Mexican war broke out, he enlisted in company L, Second Pennsylvania regiment and fought in the leading battles of that war, being in the column that stormed the heights of Chapultepec. In 1856 he was elected treasurer of Bedford county on the American ticket. In 1866 he was elected treasurer of this county. He also served on the staff of the sergeant-at-arms during one term of Congress. In 1880 Mr. Over was a delegate to the National Republican convention at Chicago and was one of the 300 delegates who received medals of honor for standing by the hero of Appomatox in that historic convention.
In 1850 Mr. Over purchased the Bedford Inquirer, which he conducted for fourteen years. He had charge of the Lewistown Gazette for one year. In 1868 he removed to Hollidaysburg and became the editor and senior proprietor of the Hollidaysburg Register. Of late years, however, he resigned the burdens of newspaper work in favor of his son, Frank J. Over.
Mr. Over was for fifty-one years an Odd Fellow. He joined the Bedford lodge in 1849. He became a member of Hollidaysburg lodge No. 119 on March 13, 1872, and was subsequently exalted to the patriarchal rank in the order.
In 1833 he was united in marriage to Elmira Faraquar, a daughter of William N. Faraquar, of Bedford. Of the six children born, four survive - Mrs. Julia Gardner, Mrs. S.C. McLanahan, of Gaysport; Miss Nellie living at home with her parents and Francis J., his son. A sister resides in Bedford. Mr. Over was a stalwart Republican.
The funeral services will be held at the late home tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock; interment in the Presbyterian cemetery. A burial squad from company C will render the last military honors."
