Husband of Harriet J. (Lesan) Lee Smith Dennison (1832-1907). James' first wife was Nancy (Winney) Moak Dennison (1821-1904). James was the father of Mary Estella, Ardella and Ella May Dennison. Adoptive father (with Harriet) of Otto Dennison. Son of William G. Dennison and Jane C. (Stewart) Dennison.

James married Nancy on July 6, 1859 in Rock Island County, Illinois. They had two children: Mary Estella (Dennison) Britton (1861-1931) and Ardella J. (Dennison) Britton (1863-1879). His two daughters married two brothers. His younger daughter, Ardella, committed suicide at the age of 16, less than a year after she was married.

Note: James married Harriet Jane (Lesan) Lee Smith on September 29, 1867 in Stark County, Illinois. Apparently (according to several court documents filed after his death) James was still married to Nancy (his first wife) when he married Harriet in 1867. Harriet became aware of this when his first wife came to collect a widow's pension for his Civil War service. James and Harriet had two children - Otto S. Dennison (1873-1923) and Ella May (Dennison) Shurtz Morris. Otto was their adopted son. I have not been able to ascertain whether or not Ella was adopted or if she was Harriet's daughter with her second husband, Minor Smith, or if she was a child that James had with someone else in about 1863 in Indiana. Ella was born about 1863 in Marion County, Indiana. She married Perry Hood Morris (1861-1927) on January 1, 1890 in Lineville, Wayne, Iowa. Marriage certificate states that she was a widow and her father was James Dennison and her last name at the time was Shurtz. Ella and Perry were divorced between 1892 and 1894. I have not been able to find Ella after this time.

James was a Veteran of the Civil War - 102nd Illinois Infantry, Co. E and 1st US Veteran Volunteer Engineers, Co. K. Member of GAR Post 237.

aka. James S. Denniston (official family name appears to be spelled "Denniston" however, all documents, biographies, census info, etc. show James used the spelling "Dennison.")
