Graveside services for PFC Francis Eldon Oaks, son of Mrs. Goldie M. Oaks and the late Edwin M. Oaks, who was killed in action during World War II, will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Maeser cemetery by Ernest Caldwell, Vernal First Ward counselor, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
PFC Oaks was killed in action December 9, 1944, while serving with an armored infantry division in France. He had been overseas since September of the same year and had been in England until shortly before his death.
Entering service in April 1943, he was stationed at Camp Cook, Fort Ord and Camp Steneman, all in California; Sheppard Field and Camp Berkley, Texas and in Louisiana. He embarked from New York.
Born at Vernal, May 14, 1924, he attended local schools and was graduated with the Uintah High School Class of 1942. During his high school career he was active in basketball and played on the main team two years. As a senior he was basketball captain and chief of police. He was also a member of the track team.
Surviving are his mother and five sisters and five brothers, Berniece Hardy, Thelma Nearing, Venice Humphries and Audrey Johnson, all of Vernal; Gladys Page of Artesia, Colorado; LeRoy, Ercell, Ivan and Orva Oaks, all of Vernal and Harold Oaks, Eunice, New Mexico.
Members of the Witbeck American Legion post are to assist in the service.
