Ray Cameron's lifelong passion was flying. He took lessons at McKinnon Air Field on St. Simons Island, GA, and earned his pilot's license at age 16. In 1946, he graduated from high school, enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church. After completing flight training in 1950, he was commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps as a 2nd Lt. He served as a fighter pilot in Korea and Vietnam, earning the Silver Star for Valor, Distinguished Flying Cross and other awards. He retired in 1972 as a Lt. Col. after 26 years of service.

From about 1980 to 1986, he continued to fly as a charter pilot for Golden Isles Aviation. He was an enthusiastic member of Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter No. 905 at Malcolm McKinnon airport long after health prevented him from flying. He was also an active member of the Antique Aircraft Association and a former president of the Coastal Georgia Archaeological Society.
