Ralph Scott Killed in Car Wreck, Near Fort Smith, Arkansas, Thursday night
Brief reference was made in the last issue of the Enter-prise to the accidental death of Ralph Scott, stating that none of the particulars were available. The facts of the tragedy, as we have gathered them are as follows:
Mr. Scott and a man who boarded with Mr. Scott, at their Kilgore home, had been to Fort Smith, Arkansas. They started on their return home, about 8 o'clock. Out about eight miles from Ft Smith, on a sharp curve in the road, they met a truck, which forced Mr. Scott to the extreme right. Mr. Scott's car a new Ford plunged over the steep embankment and turned over some five or six times. Mr. Scott was killed outright, his neck being broken, while the other man escaped injury. The truck didn't stop; hence it was not possible in the dark and excitement of the moment for the man to get the number of the truck. The man with
Mr. Scott was thoroughly questioned, acquitted and the verdict was that it was an accident.
Mr. Scott's family was notified in Kilgore. They notified his mother, Mrs. Maggie Scott and family, and Mrs. Ralph Scott's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Johnson. Jess and Walter Scott, brothers of deceased, departed at once for Kilgore. Mrs. Maggie Scott and her other children, Mrs. J. B. Johnson, and Bob; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Simpson and Miss Lorie Jackson departed Saturday for Kilgore.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the First Baptist Church in Kilgore, Rev. L. E. Holt, pastor, con-ducted the services. Burial was in the Kilgore cemetery.
Deceased was born at Bronte, Aug 8, 1898, making him to be 36 years old when the tragic end of his earthly career came. He was the son of the late Joe Scott and wife, Maggie, one of the old-time and widely know families of this part of West Texas. His wife and five children, his mother, five brothers and two sisters survive him.
The children are Maurine, Ralph Jr., Joe Dell, J. L. and Billie Ruth. The brothers are Jess, Walter, LeRoy, Daniel and Joe Edward Scott, and the sisters are Mesdames Will Athey and Ray Coalson.
Some years ago Mr. Scott moved with his family to Kilgore and entered into the hotel and café business. Kilgore had just begun its oil development. From the first Mr. Scott prospered and had a flourishing business. His hotel work brought him in close touch with the oil fraternity, and therefore he had built up around him a large circle of
friends.
Deceased was a genial, pleasant spirit. He was always smil-ing, never out of humor, and was generous with a friend to his last dime. He has many boyhood friends in and around Bronte who are grieved at his untimely passing. The shadows fall heavily upon his wife and children, his mother and other members of the family.
