REV. John D. Goldston, 58, of Rt.1, Oakdale collapsed Sunday night, February 10, 1974 in the pulpit while preaching at White Oak Baptist Church, eight mile west of Oakdale. He was dead on arrival at Harriman Hospital. Rev. Goldston had preached about five minutes when he was stricken by a heart attack and collapsed.
Goldston a well known, long time minister in the community, began his ministry from the Crab Orchard Church in 1948 where he was ordained.
He pastored churches in Tennessee and North Carolina. They were Rankin's Chapel, White Oak, Mt. Teman, Pine Orchard, Mt. Vernal and Post Oak in Tennessee and Heck's Chapel in Marion, North Carolina.
He was also well known locally from his many ten revival and radio broadcasts. Due to a heart condition he had not pastored a church for about six years and had only recently begun to preach again.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Frankie Goldston; three sons Ronald of Harriman, Route 1, Larry and John D. Jr. of Oakdale; a daughter Donna Nelson of Rt. 3, Rockwood, four grandchildren, Eric and Lyndell Goldston, Ramona and Jamie Nelson and sister, Mrs. Lummie Headrick of Oakdale and a nephew, Earl Headrick also of Oakdale.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Rankins Chapel Church, with the Revs. Dewy Roberts, Luther Powers and Arnold Hamby officiating. Interment followed in Crab Orchard cemetery, with Schubert's of Wartburg in charge. Area ministers served as honorary pall bearers. (The Morgan County News)
