RALPH E. CARTER was born Jan. 31, 1903 in St. Augustine, Fla. And died Sept. 30, 1993 in Port Charlotte, Fla. || Mr. Carter graduated from the University of Florida in 1927. He was a member of the track team for two years and held the Florida mile track record for many years. He followed his beloved Gators, holding the same stadium seat for 31 years.
Mr. Carter held teaching and principal positions at Micanopy and Miccosukee, FL. He coached the American Legion Claude Sauls Post 13 baseball team from 1936 to 1938, winning 2 state championships. He organized the recreation program for the City of Tallahassee and served as its first director for 10 years until he entered the Naval Service in World War II in 1942. He served as Recreational Director at the San Diego Naval Base, rose to the rank of Lt. Commander, and retired from the Navy in 1951. He also served as recreation director for Lockheed Aircraft in Atlanta, GA.
In the 1960's he became Director of Recreation in Charlotte County, FL, organizing the first Charlotte County Youth Council. His aim was to provide youth with wholesome activities and to train them to be responsible citizens. For his efforts in this field he received many rewards.
Mr. Carter is survived by 1 brother and 4 sisters, Charles L. Carter, Tallahassee, FL, Elizabeth C. Robinson, Ocala, FL, Leone C. Carey, Ocala, FL, Lillie Thompson, Sebring, FL, Margaret Aguillard, Port Lavaca, Texas.
Graveside services will be held at Micanopy, FL, Monday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. with Milam Funeral Home of Gainesville, FL in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Charlotte County Parks and Recreation Gift Giving Program, payable to the Charlotte County Board of Commissioners....
