MONTPELIER, Iowa - Alvin E. Messinger, 93, of Montpelier, died Monday, December 11, 2006, at Unity Hospital.

Funeral Service will be at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Reverend Bruce Martin of the Calvary Church will officiate the service. Casket bearers will be Douglas Messinger, Chris Tueth, Dale Bird, and Jerry Bird. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery.

Alvin was born on February 26, 1913, in Nogat, Germany, the son of Gustav and Amelia Neuman Messinger. He married Medrith Richards on March 6, 1988, in New Era.

He was a US Army veteran serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He worked for H. J. Heinz Company for over 40 years.

Alvin liked to fish, hunt, and put together jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include his wife, Medrith Messinger of Montpelier; one son, Rick Messinger and wife, Toni, of Alton, Illinois; two grandchildren, Douglas Messinger and wife, Laura, and Jill Tueth and husband, Chris; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas Messinger, twin great-granddaughters, Natalie and Mallory Messinger, and Kylie Tueth; two step-sons, Dale Bird and wife, Lori, and Jerry Bird and wife, Valli, all of Montpelier; two step-daughters, Carol Soteros of Muscatine, and Judy Tucker and husband, Jerry, of Montpelier; 27 step-grandchildren; many step-great and step-great great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elsie Weber of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters, and stepchildren, Edgar Bird, Marvin Bird, and Jeanette and Bob Peck.
