Mr. Bankston, who died Sunday, February 7, 2010, at Parkway Hospital, was born a twin on March 18, 1929, to the late James Bankston and Francis Speaks Bankston. Preceding him in death were his wife, Ceola Bankston; one son, Greg Hurd; two brothers, Willie Bankston Sr., his twin, James Speaks "Little Bit" Bankston; three sisters, Eugene "Geannie" Clay, Christine "Duka" Bankston and Corinne Bankston.
He leaves to cherish his memory one son, James Bankston of Hillsboro; two daughters, Sharon (Mike) Thomas of Winston Salem, N.C. and Beverly Bankston of Decatur; one sister, Naomi Ashford of Los Angeles, CA; two sisters-in-law, Dora Bankston of Decatur, Annie Bankston of Cleveland, OH, six grandchildren, Brittany Bankston of Decatur, Whitley Bankston of Birmingham, Sean (April) Stanback, LaShawndria Stanback, and Wayne Stanback Jr., all of Winston Salem, N.C., Gregina Hurd of Oklahoma City, OK, five great-grandchildren, and many loving nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Mr. Bankston was a graduate of Tennessee Valley High School and attended Tuskegee Institute. He enjoyed a prestigious Air Force career from which he retired, in 1974, after 24 years and also serving in the Korean War. He received many decorations and awards including: the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 4 Bronze Leaf Clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal with 3 Loops, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and Air Force Commendation Medal. He retired a second time in 1992 after 15 years of service as an electrician, with Bunge Corporation.
