Rhoda was the third daughter [of five] born to Edward Richards and Elizabeth Stewart, along with three brothers. She grew up on the family plantation 6.4 miles south east of Rocky Mount.
Her parents were friends and neighbors with the Stewart, Warren, and Hodges families along Chesnut Creek. Her sisters married men from these families, and her brothers married daughters from the same.
Rhoda wedded Jesse in 1790, and they received 40 acres of land from her father Edward on February 2 1799. Elijah Warren, a Richards' neighbor, went surety for the wedding.
Following her parents' death in 1812, she and Jesse left for Tennessee with her brother Edmund Hendley Richards Sr., some brothers-in-law, and aunts and uncles. They purchased land in Robertson County Tennessee and settled there. Jesse and Rhoda raised their family and lived to the end of their lives in that locale.
